Treat your cat to a cave

Mollie in the Cat Cave.

Note: I received a Cat Cave bed in exchange for this review.

It’s no secret that cats love cozy, snug hide-outs and the Cat Cave fits the bill.

I opened the package, fluffed out the bed and both Mollie and Sofiya immediately took turns checking it out. The bed is a perfect size for the average kitty – snug and cozy without being confining.

The Cat Cave is made of soft felted Merino wool with a 7-inch opening, just wide enough to climb into. According to the website, the wood is ethically sourced from New Zealand and imported into Nepal where the wood is cleaned and dried. The dye used is a 100 percent vegetable-based dye that is natural and organic.

The beds can be hand washed; squeeze out the excess water, reshape and let dry naturally.

Because the Cat Cave is handmade, colors and dimensions may vary slightly. There’s a great selection of colors and some whimsical designs such as the Beanstalk Cat Cave and the Fairy House Cat Cave.

At last count, my three cats have some 16 beds, tall scratchers, and perches to choose from around the house. They often hang out where I am, either in my office or living room, and have self-assigned spots, so I haven’t determined the optimum location for the Cat Cave. Thus far, Tekla, my almost-17-year-old, has remained in her favorite spots. Mollie and Sofiya have experimented with the Cave Cave, sniffing and pouncing on it, and laying on top of it of; there’s a bit of a competition for it. I sprinkled a bit of catnip inside for extra attraction.

Sofiya’s turn.

Sofiya, my young Russian Blue, likes lounging on top of it, rolling around, and bunny-kicking it. In the short time, it’s been with us, the Cat Cave seems to have become a mini-playground.

I will note that the Cat Caves are not inexpensive, but they are fairly priced for a quality handmade product from a socially conscious company. Promotional codes are offered. A variety of toys, scratchers, and wall-mounted shelving are also available.

The colors and styles of the Cat Cave, along with its additional products can be found at catcaveco.com. And here’s a cute video that shows how the Cat Cave is made (along with cute cats enjoying them.)

I like this! Can it be folded so that it does not take up space if the cat does not lie in it?
